It’s Always Sunny in San Diego…

Its funny to think about a conversation that I had with a woman during my flight to San Diego, ” You’re going to LOVE SD. It’s always sunny and just a beautiful place.” A beautiful place, that it was but the sun… can’t quite say that I saw it much (I just happened to be there for one of the coldest weeks).

Nevertheless, for my first experience on the west coast, the trip was inspiring, full of adventures and a step forward in my relationship with KEZA. It’s unbelievable to think of how my relationship with those involved with KEZA has been through phone calls and emails prior to the trip. Yet, when we had all met in person, it felt like it was just another day of seeing the people we’ve known for ages.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have travel and (finally) meet Ilea and Jared (of KEZA), who have both become such an inspiration. They have both shown me what it means to be passionate about something you truly believe in. Not to mention, those guys certainly know how to make life a never ending adventure.

Tiffany (USD intern) was also a pleasure to finally met. Upon meeting her during our connecting flight in Houston, its unbelievable how fast our friendship had evolved (by the end I had started calling her ‘momma’). She took care of me and showed me the treasures of San Diego. Not to mention, tolerated my demands for specific pictures that I was determined to take.

As the trip has ended, it’s unfortunate that we have all gone back home and are now back to conference calls. But now I know I have a great support in the connections I’ve created and the progress only continues from here.

Food + Community

On my recent trip to San Diego I realized food and community are two of my favorite combinations. There was a lot riding on the trip from its inception. It was to be our first KEZA trunk show in Solana Beach, and our first KEZA staff meet-and-greet this summer. For me it was to be the first official meeting of Jared and Ilea (of KEZA) and Esther (the RISD intern), the three people I have been working with all summer, but had yet to meet. Turns out for Esther’s first experience of sunny SD, it was the coldest July in SD since 1939! Bummer for sure but it led to many other adventures like kayaking in the ocean, hiking Torrey Pines, driving along the scenic HWY 1, running by the bay, lots of Polaroid’s, wrong turns and eating!
Our trunk show was not as profitable financially as one could hope. However, one thing I learned about Jared and Ilea (and Keza for that matter) is that they build relationships and community where ever they go. Last Saturday night I sat around a table in University Heights, washing my hands with a warm wet knap in preparation of an Ethiopian meal in true traditional Ethiopian style—no utensils. An experience yes, but what made the night truly enjoyable and unique was that the majority present had met 3 days ago. ::UBUNTU::
The trip was fruitful and full of discovery. I got a taste of what an internship could look like had we all been together (proximity wise) this summer…and it’s hard to see all of what could have been, even so the tipping point is near…. and I’m anxiously active in anticipation.

Getting the Word Out

As I continue to sketch out designs and constantly look around for inspiration, I also try to think about how we can get KEZA’s name out there. Although I love spending time in the library researching and gathering images from their books, when it comes down to it, the internet has been my largest resource of inspiration.

Blogging has certainly helped a tremendous amount in gathering unknown followers of common interests. That is certainly one way to spread the word. I would love to see KEZA do a spread in a magazine. Although magazines have somewhat become obsolete, they’re still strong in the fashion world.

As I gather inspiration off the internet, there are always images that have come from magazine spreads. This is a goal certainly worth putting on the list. I’ve started to gather a list of magazines that I feel are worthy of trying to get in contact with. Lets see what we can offer them!

As far as progress this week, I’ve continued to sketch. I’m mostly excited to finally be able to meet with Jared this week in San Diego to discuss my designs and work with him to tweak/manipulate/add/change the designs I’ve created. It will be interesting to see how two creative minds can work together.
