It’s Always Sunny in San Diego…

Its funny to think about a conversation that I had with a woman during my flight to San Diego, ” You’re going to LOVE SD. It’s always sunny and just a beautiful place.” A beautiful place, that it was but the sun… can’t quite say that I saw it much (I just happened to be there for one of the coldest weeks).

Nevertheless, for my first experience on the west coast, the trip was inspiring, full of adventures and a step forward in my relationship with KEZA. It’s unbelievable to think of how my relationship with those involved with KEZA has been through phone calls and emails prior to the trip. Yet, when we had all met in person, it felt like it was just another day of seeing the people we’ve known for ages.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have travel and (finally) meet Ilea and Jared (of KEZA), who have both become such an inspiration. They have both shown me what it means to be passionate about something you truly believe in. Not to mention, those guys certainly know how to make life a never ending adventure.

Tiffany (USD intern) was also a pleasure to finally met. Upon meeting her during our connecting flight in Houston, its unbelievable how fast our friendship had evolved (by the end I had started calling her ‘momma’). She took care of me and showed me the treasures of San Diego. Not to mention, tolerated my demands for specific pictures that I was determined to take.

As the trip has ended, it’s unfortunate that we have all gone back home and are now back to conference calls. But now I know I have a great support in the connections I’ve created and the progress only continues from here.

Putting Ideas onto Paper

As I begin to put my ideas onto paper, I find yet more challenges to overcome. As I’ve collected image after image, I find it difficult to push my designs so that it may not be too heavily influenced by my inspiration. Although, the materials that I am working with are different, I essentially don’t want to copy, but alter and push my designs to the next level. As I’ve learned from my time at RISD, very rarely does an artist go with his first idea. Ideas are meant to grow and branch out into multiple directions.

From this point, I think it’s time to look at what I’ve sketched thus far and work out quirks that will spark new pieces. This week I’m starting to pull out the actual materials and experiment with putting them together. Another challenge is certainly putting my ideas two-dimensionally onto paper when I have a clear image of what I’m thinking visually.

Once again, working with the materials is going to help that process significantly. I’m excited that things are moving along. Creating a solid piece of jewelry is a process that takes patience and careful attention to detail. And that is what I’m trying to do so KEZA may have unique products that they can ‘wow’ their audience with.
